The Makansi Effect

September 30, 2009

For this week’s edition of my shout-out entry to bloggers who are friends or people whose writing I respect, I bring you Jason Makansi’s site, www.jasonmakansi.com.

I joined a freshly formed writing critique group earlier this summer, and Jason is the other male member of the group. His writing style is unique and he gives great feedback that’s to the point.

The thing I most admire about Jason is that he writes prolifically. I mean that he’s always writing. He’s overcome the barrier that gets in the way of most of us writers–he actually writes. He puts pen to paper on a consistent basis.

The other really cool thing about Jason is his family–his wife and two daughters are all quite creative, and they all enjoy reading and writing. I hope when I have kids that they find some creative passion, and I hope I foster that creativity. One of the traditions that Jason and his family have is that they rent a cabin in the woods for a long weekend every year and just go out there and write and read and talk about writing and reading. That’s it. How cool is that? I bet that cabin is bursting with creative energy.

Check out Jason’s site and sample his writing. His style(s) is quite different from mine, but I think you’ll appreciate it.

You paint such a nice picture of this family. Hope one day you may be doing the same thing with a few people you love. I imagine you will forgo the hike in a thunderstorm, but it could get the creative juices flowing.

    Jamey:

I don’t know if blogging etiquette allows this public thank you (I am still learning how to navigate all this), but just delete if not. This was really kind of you to write and Kristy, Elena, and Amira will really get a kick out of it.
